New voting laws in Texas, Kansas and Georgia face courtroom challenges over their attempts to criminalize behavior around casting a ballot, marking another flashpoint in the legal battle over voting laws across the country.

Dozens of states have passed new laws in the wake of the 2020 election either expanding or limiting voting rules, sparking a surge in election-related litigation. But until now, most voting laws governed how election officials administer elections and didn’t involve criminal penalties.
