One-on-one with Nan Whaley: Former Dayton mayor now running for Ohio governor

DAYTON FOR EIGHT YEARS. YEAH, AND NOWAN N WHALEY WANTS TO BE YOUR NEXT GOVERNOR. SHE’S JOINING US HERE IN STUDIO THIS AFTERNOON AT 4 O’CLK.OC SO LET’S GET RIGHT TO IT HERE TALK TO US ABOUT THE BASICS. WHAT IS THE MTOS IMPORTANT THING FOR OHIO? AND WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY FOR THE WHALEY ADMINISTRATION? YEAH, LOOK I THINK FOR THE PAST THREE DECADES WE’VE HAD THE SAME GUYS IN CHARGE, OOHI IS FOLLOWING FALLING FURTHER AND FURTHER BEHIND AND THEIR FAMILIES. OUR FAMILIES HAVE FALNLE FURTHER AND FURTHER BEHIND. MEANWHILE THESE GUYS LINE. POCKETSND A ARE REALLY MORE INTERESTED IN LOBBYISTS AND THEIR DORONS AND WE NEED WE NEED A BETTER LEADERSHIP OHIO DESERVES BETTER THAN THAT. SO YOU’RE SAYING THE NUMBERNE O PRIORITY FOR YOU IS KNOCKING OUT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. WELL, IT’S A CLEANING UP THE CORRUPTION. I MEAN, YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE CALLED BY THE FBI THE MOST CORRUPT STATEN I THE COUNTRY, WHICH TAKES SOME WORK CLEARLY. THEY’RE PAYING ATTENTION TO THOSE ISSUES RATHER THANHE T ISSUES THATRE A HAPPENING IN COMMUNITIES, LIKE EVEN DALE AND HAMILTON AND MIDDLE TOWN IN CINCINNATI, YOU KNOW, WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE A STATE GOVERNMENT. TO BE A REAL PARTNER WITH COMMUNITIES AND REALLY FOCUSED AROUND THE ISSSUE THAT ARE AFFECTING FAMILIES WHICH YOU KNOW IS THE FACT THAT PEOPLE’S PAY IS YOU, KNOW, NOT GOING UP FAST ENOUGH AND THEIR BILLS KEEP ON GOING UP TOO. AND SO PEOEPL ARE WORKING HARDER AND HARDER AND LONGER HOURS AND THERE’S SO MUCH TO STATE GOVERNMENT COULD DO ABOUT THAT, BUT THEY CHOOSE NOT TO I WAS GONNA SAY PEOPLE MAY SAY WE HAVE A LOT GNGOI ON RIGHT NOW FROM INFLATION TO ECONOMIC GROWTH. WHY ARE TSEHO NOT THE MOST IMRTPOANT OR ABORTION RIGHTS THINGS LIKE THAT? WHY ARE THOSE NOT AT THE FOREFRONT IN YOUR MIND? FOR OHIO. WELL, I THINK THEY ARE FOR US, YOUNOW K OUR MESSAGES AT OHIO DESERVES BETTE ARND THAT WE WANT FOLKS PAY TO GO UP THEIR BILLS TO GO DOWNND A THEIR GOVERNMENT TO FINLYAL WORK FOR THEM. WHAT’S HAPPENED AT THE STATE HOUSE. IS THAT WNHE YOU HAVE THE MOST CORRUPT STATE HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY THE ISSUES THAT COME BEFORE THEM A TREHE ONES TTHA ARE ABOUT SELF-DEALING AND SELF-INTEREST RIGHT? SO THIS FIRST ENERGY SCANDAL, WHICH ’E’RE PAYING IT WAS A BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT FOR A COMPANY IN AKRON. WE’RE PAYING FOR IT EVERY SINGLE MONTH ON OUR ELECTRIC BILL. WE’RE STILL SUBSIDIZING A COAL PL AN IN INDIANA WITH THIS CORRUPTION. XTA BECAUSE THEY HAD SPECIAL INTERESTS IN DONORS, YOU KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE THAT GOING ON OVER AND OVER AGAIN WHAT’S MISSED IS THE FACT THAT WE NEED WAGES TO GO UP. WE NEED IESNVTMENT IN CHILD CARE. WE NEED TO HOLD BIG OIL AND BIG PHARMA ACCOUNTABLE SO THEY DON’T PRICE GOUGE OUR SENIORS PARTICULARLY. SO PEOPLE CAN AFFORD TO HAVE A GOOD QLIUATY OF LIFE IN OHIO, AND THAT’’ NOT BEEN A FOCUS FOR A WHILE NOW. WELL YOURPP OONENT JOHN CRANLEY, WHO WAS THE FORMER MAYOR OF CINCINNATI? HE SAT IN THAT CHAIRN O TUESDAY. HE SAID THAT HE IS BETTER SUITED FOR THE JOB OF GOVERN. BECAUSE DURINGIS H TIME HERE AS MAYOR. HE SAW ECONOMIC GAMES OUR CITIES ON ECONOMIC GAINS OVER DAYTON DURING YOUR TIME AS MAYOR THERE. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAYO T THAT? WELL, LOOK, I MEAN DAYTON IS A GRITTY AND RESILIENT CYIT AND WHEN I CAME IN AS MAYOR IT WAS AT A LOW POINT, YOU KNOW, WE HAD PROBABLY ONEF O THE WORST GATRE RECESSIONS IN THE COUNTRY. WE LET THE NATION AND ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE DEATHS WE SAW WE DON’T HAVE ANY FORTUNE 500 COMPANIES THEY HAD LEFT TOWN AND WE BROUGHT THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO REALLY WORK ON THESE ISSUES WE CUT OVERDOSE DEATH HALF WE SAW THOUSANDS OF NEW JOBS BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND INVESTMENT, YOU KNOW, JOHN CRANLEY WITH ALL DUE RESPECT WAS AS MAYOR HE WAS BORN ON THIRD AND THINKS HE HIT A TRIPLE RIGHT? THERE’S BEEN GREAT OPPORTUNITY IN THIS CITY FOR SURE BECAUSE OF YOU KNOW, FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL TEAMS AND YOU KNOW, SIX FORTUNE 500OM CPANIES THOSE KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES MAKE IT EASIER TO SEE THAT KIND OF GROHWT WHEN I’VE VISITED 88 COUNTIES ACROSS THE STATE COMMUNITIES ARE A VERY SIMILAR TO DAYTON THEY LOCAL LEADERS WORKING REALLY HARD TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD, BUT THEY DON’T HAVE A PARTNER AT THE STATE HOUSE AND THAT’S WTHA WE’RE TRYING TDOO AND FRANKLY WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO MAYOR CRANLEY. WE ALL ALREADY HAVE ONE GOVERNOR THAT DISRESPECTS DAYTON AND WE CERTAINLY DON’T NEED ANOTHER. LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT. WE GAVEOU Y THE OPPORTUNITYO T DEBATE CRANLEY HERE IN CINCINNATI AND YOUR CAMPAIGN AGREED TO IT AND THEN THEY BACKEDUT O OF IT. WHY NOT HAVE THIS DEBATE WITH HIM? WELL, LOOK, WE’VE HAD DEBATES ACROSS THE STATE FRANKLY. WE WERE TRYING TO GET UP IN CLEVELAND. THERE WAS NONE IN CLEVELAND. THERE’S NOT BNEE A LOT OF ATTENTION WHERE 40% OF THE DEMOCRATIC VOTE IS. WEID D ONE JUST LAST WEEK IN COLUMBUS, AND WE’VE DONE COUNTLESS COUNTLESS FORUMS. AND SO WE’VE HAD QUITE A BIT OF CONVERSATION WITH JOHN CRANLEY OVER THE YEARS SO YOU DIDN’T FEEL LIKE YOU NEEDED TO D IOT AGAIN. NO, I MEAN WE’VE DONE DOZENS AND DOZENS OF THEM FRANKLY SO THAT YOU KNOW,HE TRE’S ONLY SO MUCH TIME IN THE CAMP IN THE CANDIDATES CALENDAR. AND SO THAT WAS OUR ABILITY TO GET THOSE THROUGH. WELL OHIO REMAINS A RED STATE OF COURSE AND SINCE 1963, WE’VE ONLY HAD THREE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS WHAT MAKES THINK THAT VOTERS SHOULD YOU SHOULDE B BEAT INCUMBENT MIKE DEWINE. WELL, LOOK, WE HAVE RUN THE SAME KIND OF CANDIDATE AS DECRMOATS FOR THREE DECADES,OU Y KNOW, WE’VE RUN A CANDIDATE LIKE JOHN CRANLEY FOR EVERY TIME FOUR YEARS AGOND A FOUR YEARS BEFORE THAT AND WHAT WE HAVEN’T DONE IS WE HAVEN’T TRIED SOMETHING DIFFERENT. YOU KNOW, I’M THE ONLY CANDIDATE IN THIS RACE. THATS I NOT A MILLIONAIRE. I AM PROUD TO BE WORKING CLASS FROM THE WORKING CLASS AND I’LL FIGHT FOR THE WORNGKI CLASS AND FRANKLY. WE’VE NEVER TRIED TO RUN A WOMAN IN THE HISTORY OF OHIO AND THAT’S YOU KN,OW MENTIONED ACTUALLY EARLIER ABOUT YOU KNOW, THE ISSUE AROUND CHOE,IC YOU KNOW, WE KNOW ROE V WEAD IS GOING TO FALL IT IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR MAKING SURE THAT WOMEN HAVE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE OPTIONS FOR THEMSELV AESND MAKING SURE THEY HEAV ABORTION ACCESS. YOU KNOW, I’VE BEEN ON THE FRONT LINES FIGHTING ENVE FOR THE CINCINNATI CNILIC TO STAY OPEN KEEPING THE DATE AND CLINIC OPEN. IT’S WHY PLANNED PARENTHOOD AND PRO-CHOICE, OHIO HAVE ENDORSED ME AND IM A THE ONLY CANDIDATE DEMOATCR OR REPUBLICAN HAS BEEN ON THE FRONT LINES MY ENTIRE CAREER TO BE PRO-CHOICE AND WHILE WE’RE HAPPY THAT MAY FAMILY HAS JOINED OUR BANDWAGON. WISH HE WAS THERE WHEN WE WERE TRYING TO KEEP THE CINCINNATI CLINIC OPEN BECAUSE HE WAS QUITE FRANKLY NOWHERE TO BE FOUND TALK ABOUT THAT THOUGH IF ROE V WADE FAILS, WTHA ARE YOU GOING TO DO THEN AS OUR NEXT GOVERNOR TO HELP WOMEN WHO AREN’T PREPAREDR O READY TO HAVE A BABY OR TO HELP ETH CHILDREN WHO COULD BE IN LESS THAN FAVORABLE CONDITIONS LIVING CONDITIONS. WELL, LOOK THE GOVERNOR WLIL BE THE LAST STOP LIKELY ON ROE V WADE FOLLOWING. IT’LL BECOME STATE BYTA STE IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK AND THE GOVERN ARE GOING TO BE KEY TO CIDERS ON WHAT KIND OF LAWS GET PASSED, YOU KNOW, I COMMI TTO VETO ANY BILL THAT AFFECTS WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE ACCESS THAT COMES ACROSSY M DESK AND SECONDLY WE NEED TO HAVE A PRO-CHOICE PUBLIC HEALTH DIRECTOR IN OUR CABINET TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN HAVE ACCESS AND FIGHT FOR ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITSIE AND COMMUNITIES ACROSS OHIO. THESE WILL BE CENTER. FOR USN I OUR RACE AND AS GOVERNING BECAUSE I YOU KNOW, THIS IS A VERY PERSONAL ISSUE FOR ME NOW TOP GUN RIGHTS IN OHIO MANY MAY ARGUE THAT THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS YOU’RE AT THE FOREFRONT IN THIS IN THIS RACE BECAUSE WE FIRST WERE INTRODUCED TO YOU IN A LOT OF WAYS DURING ETH TRAGEDY IN YOUR CITY AND WITH THE ATTACK IN THE OREGON DISTRICT, WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THAT? AND ALSO WHY IS THAT SOMETHING THAT’S NOTT A THE FOREFNTRO ON YOUR CAMPAIGN’S WEBSITE? WELL, LOOK I AM PROUD OF THE WORK. THAT I’VE DONE AROUND GUN SAFETY. I WAS EVERY TOWN’S LOCAL LEADER OF THE YEAR TSHI YEAR AND YOU KNOW, IT’S IT’S A VERY PERSONAL ISSUE FOR ME RHTIG IN AUGUST OF 2019. YOU KNOW, WE LTOS NINE PEOPLE AND 27 MORE WERE INJURED IN THE COURSE OF 32 SECONDS AND THE NEXTAY D WE HAD A VIGIL THAT THOUSANDSF O DAYTONIANS CAME TO AN D WHEN MIKE DEWINE TOOK TO THE STAGE TO SPEAK YOU MAY REMEMBER THEY THE FKSOL OF DAYTON ALL SHOUTEDND A FRESH FRUSTRATION DO SOMETHING DO SOMETHING. NOW NEVER IN MY WORST NIGHTMARE DID I THINK THAT THE GOVERNOR WOULD DO SOMETHING TO MAKE THIS WORSE? HE HAS DONE THISY B SIGNING STAND YOUR GROUND AND PERMITLESS CONCEALED CARRY PERMITLESS CONCEALED CARRY IS A IS A BILL AND A SIGNED INTO LAW NOW THAT ACTUALLY MAKES OUR POLICE OFFICERS LESS SAFE. PLSEEA OFFICERS WERE AGAINST IT AND EVERY STUDY SHOWS THAT BOTH OF THESE BUILDS MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES. SAFE,OU Y KNOW, WE BELIEVE IN COMMON SENSE GUN SAFETY, AND WE’RE NOT TALKING ABOUT RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS REHE. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE GUNS IN THEIR HANDS INHE T FIRST PLACE LAST WEEK. NBC NEWS RELEASED THAT THE NUMBER ONE CAUSEF O DEATH OF CHILDREN NOW IS GUN ACCIDENTS ANDND A GUN VIOLENCE. THINK ABOUT THAT. THAT’S THE NUMBER ONE MOST LIKELY WAY. YOU’RE GOING TO DIE AS A CLDHI NOW AND WE HAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMON SENSE GUN LEGISLATION THAT 9 OUT OF 10 OHIOANS AGREE WITH BUT AGAIN, WE’RE GETTING BACK TO A CORRUPT STATE HOUSE. TH AT ISN’T INTERESTED IN WHAT 9 OUT OF 10 OHIOANS WANT THEY’RE INTEREEDST ONLY IN RADICAL IDEAS EXTREME POLITICSND A WHO’’ LINING THEIR POCKETS QUICKLY HERE. YOU’VE YOU JUST MENTIONED GOVERNOR DEWINE ANDF I YOU WERE ABLE TO BEAT CRANLY IN THE PRIMARYN O TUESDAY, LOOK THERE’S A NAME RECOGNITION PROBLEM HERE. GOVERNOR DEWINE HAS BEEN OUT THERE PRETTY MUCH EVERY DAYOR F THE LAST TWO YEARS DOING HE’S BEEN OUT HERE SINCE I WAS 10 MONTHS OLD. THAT’’ WHEN HE GOT ELECTED. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO BE ABLE TO BEAT HIM COME YOU KNOW THIS THE MAIN ELECTION. WELL, YEAH, I MEAN, I THINK FRANKLY THAT HE’S BEEN IN OFFICE SINCE I WAS 10 MONTHS OLD PEOPLE KNOW HIM VERY WELL HIS LIKELY TO WIN HIS PRIMARY WITUTHO 50% OF THE VOTE THERE. IT’S NOT A BAD THING THAT TYHE KNOW MIKE DEWINE. SO ONHE T PRIMARY NO IN THE GENERAL, I MEAN, I MEAN, YOU KNOW, THERE’S BEEN PULLING I ALSO SHOWED THAT 45% OF REPUBLICAN VOTERS REFUSED TO VOTEOR F MIKE DEWINE IN THE IMPRARY OR THE GENERAL LIKE HE HAS A REAL SERIOUS SITUATION IN HERE. THIS IS THE CASE. IF YOU’VE LIVED IN OHIO, AND YOUR LIFE IS BTERET THAN IT WAS THE PAST FOUR DECADES THAT MIKE DEWINE SPENT IN CHARGE SINCE I’VE BEEN BORED. YOU’RE RIGHT. I’M NOTHE T CANDIDATE FOR YOU. BUT IF YOU ARE FALLING FURTHER AND FURTHER BEHIND YOU’RE WORKING LONGER HOURS YOUR PAY IS LESS YOUR BLSIL ARE GOING UP. YOU NEED TO GIVE US A LOOK AND I THINK THAT’S REALLY THE MESSAGE BECAE WUSHEN I’VE BNEE TO EVERY SINGLE COUNTY PEOPLE ARE REAYLL FRUSTRATED OF BEING FORGOTTEN AND IGNORED AND IT’S NOT JUST A NATIONAL ISSUE FOR THEM. IT’’ A LOCAL ISSUE YOU HAVE LOCAL IS DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN WORKING REAYLL REALLY HARD, BUT THEY’RE NOT GETTING THE SUPPORT THEY NEED FROM THE STATE HSEOU AND THE STATE HOUSE IS ONLY INTEREST IN ONE. ROWAN IS THE COLUMBUS METRO. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU APPRECIATE SUCH A CANDID CONVERSATION. AND AS YOU SAID BEFORE WE KNOW YOU’RE SUPER BUSY. YEAH, YOU’VE BEEN RUNNING AROUND THIS STATE LIKE CRAZY. SO WE APPRECIATE YOU TAKING SOMETISME SHOPPING IN FOR DINNER DAYTON MAY OR NAN WHALEY AND WE WILL HAVE MORE ON THE PRIMARIES JUST DAYS AWAY HERE NTEX TUESDAY. WE’LL HAVE IT ALL COVERED FOR YOU.
